At Sky College we offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting points, as they progress through each Key Stage. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, external examination bodies as well as providing other experiences which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the students in our school.  The aim of our curriculum is for students to have the requisite skills to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education or employment .

Our philosophy is to provide a holistic and individualised approach designed and tailored to support students to fulfil their potential. Staff are expert in their field and are consistently challenging both students and themselves in order to overcome barriers to success and provide students with the tools they require to thrive.

We have a shared vision to embed a nurturing strategy throughout the school as we realise that effective learning will take place when lessons are outstanding, staff are confident and students have high self-esteem and feel safe in their learning environment. Our aim is to be an invaluable resource within our community and to build our reputation as an exceptional provider of specialist education.

The curriculum is underpinned by the school’s Core Values (Respect, Responsibility, Hope, Wisdom Courage, Justice, Integrity and Compassion) and these are taught on their own and through other areas of the curriculum, including assemblies. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our students and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum.

Students are taught using a range of qualification frameworks in cross year groups. We recognise that our students have varying experiences of education prior to arriving at Sky and we meet each student at the level that provides them with support and challenge to fulfil their potential.  Specialist teachers and instructors deliver in all subject areas. All classroom staff are given training and opportunity to keep developing their own subject knowledge, skills and understanding so they can support curriculum development and their colleagues throughout the school. Theme days, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. Additional whole school programmes and approaches support quality teaching and learning and the school is well resourced in terms of learning materials, books and technology.

The outdoor environment and the local community are an opportunity for active learning for all our students and the school grounds have been developed so they can enrich different curriculum areas. Students have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners regularly through the year.  Developing their independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.
