At Sky College we adhere to the National Curriculum and KS3 strategy initiatives for English. All Sky Learners are regularly assessed in three key areas: reading, writing and oral communication. We also offer literacy intervention with a specialist in a 1:1 setting to raise attainment and develop confidence in individual literacy levels in order to maximise progress. Our dedicated team use a variety of styles, approaches and interactive resources to make English an exciting experience at Sky.

We offer our students a broad experience at Key Stage 3 including exposure to the world of advertising and media, language of persuasion, creative writing and writing to inform. Students encounter fiction through a range of exciting and modern texts such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and non-fiction including online Newspapers and Magazines, Graphic Novels, and websites. Much of the focus of our planning is to deliver learning through topic work in order that key areas of literacy such as reading, spelling and grammar are approached in an engaging way through lessons.

At KS4 Sky Learners follow the Edexcel Entry 3 in English qualification, as well as Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 syllabus.  Once students have completed these qualifications they can then progress to the AQA GCSE syllabus for English Language and access the English Literature programme if appropriate. The specification enables students to develop specific skills in inference, exploration, language analysis and deduction. All students can engage with the selected texts due to the stepped approach to reading in the foundation papers.

This combination of qualifications gives students practical skills for the modern world and will help them get the most from life, learning and work.  We aim to ensure students have good communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening as these provide students with the skills they will use in everyday situations in the workplace.
